The Greenstone Guide to Fun in Austin

SMALL TOWNS

There are many charming small towns in the Texas Hill Country. Most of them are deemed to be tourist shopping locations, and while that's true, that's not necessarily bad. Many of our small tourist towns still have real charm and history, so it's always worth a road trip out to visit them.

BOERNE, TX

A nice town to shop and eat with several parks nearby.

COMFORT

Great place for antique shopping.

DRIFTWOOD

The home of The Salt Lick BBQ and Barsana Dham.

FREDERICKSBURG, TX

One of my favorite destinations. A wonderful town with great food, great shopping, and lots of civic events.

GRUENE, TX

An excellent little tourist town with lots of shops.

JOHNSON CITY

A stop on the way to Fredericksburg with some antiques.

SALADO

A stop on the way to Waco or Dallas. Lots of shops to see.

SAN ANTONIO

Ok, not a small town, but still a great place to visit!

SHINER

Free tours of the brewery that makes the best beer in Texas.

WIMBERLEY

A small town with very good shops and places to eat.
